Reassurance About Your Oral Health

Reassurance About Your Oral Health

We want to care for your long-term health, not only your teeth, which is why your regular dental check-up includes a screening for oral cancer. While the word cancer can be frightening, this screening is a standard part of your exam, and we keep it simple to give you peace of mind.

Why Are Screenings So Important?

We’re committed to offering preventative care for your oral health, which includes oral cancer screenings, because early detection saves lives. Like many health conditions, the consequences of oral cancer can be reduced if it’s detected in its earliest stages, even before you notice any symptoms.

Signs to Watch For Between Visits

While regular screenings are the best way to detect changes, it's important to know what’s changing in your own health. If you notice any of the following changes in your mouth, you can reach out to Dr. Robinson before your regular check-in:

  • A sore or lump in your mouth, throat, or on your lips that won’t heal
  • A white or red patch on your gums, tongue, or tonsils
  • Numbness in your tongue or another area of your mouth
  • Consistent pain when you chew, swallow, or move your jaw
  • A noticeable change or hoarseness in your voice

These signs don't necessarily mean you have oral cancer, but it does mean you should let us examine what’s happening in your mouth to make sure what has changed.

How We Approach Your Screening

Our screenings are a quick, completely painless, and non-invasive part of your regular checkup with Dr. Robinson. After examining your smile, he’ll perform a simple visual and tactile check on your lips, gums, tongue, inner cheeks, roof of your mouth, and the back of your throat for any abnormalities. It’s quick and simple!
